Introduction:
On Sunday, May 19, 2024, The Great Bristol Run will take place. It will include a half marathon, a 10k, family and mascot events. There will be extensive traffic closures in central Bristol due to the event, beginning as early as 4:00 AM and continuing until about 5:00 PM. The impacted areas and traffic closures are broken down in detail below:
Important Road Closures:
a) All-inclusive Closures:
- Road closures will be implemented gradually, with Anchor Road closing at 4:00 AM. Roads will progressively reopen as the event progresses and the areas are cleared.
- The majority of the race’s roadways will close in the early morning and reopen by 5:00 PM.
b) Particular Closures:
- Important roads will be closed at different times during the day, usually from about 4:00 AM to late afternoon.
- These include Anchor Road, Broad Weir, College Green, Gasferry Road, Hotwell Road, Merchants Road, Nelson Street, Park Street, Penn Street, Lewins Mead, Queens Square, Redcliffe Way, Rupert Street, Temple Meads, and The Center.
Anchor Road: Anchor Road is close from 4:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Broad Weir: Closed from 5:00 AM to 3:45 PM is Broad Weir.
College Green: 5:00 AM to 3:45 PM closed.
Gasferry Road: Closed from 4:00 AM to 5:00 PM is Gasferry Road.
Hotwell Road: Closed from 4:00 AM to 5:00 PM is Hotwell Road.
Park Street: Detours are in place, and buses travelling towards Broomhill and Stockwood are close.
Temple Meads: 5:00 AM to 3:45 PM closed.
Redcliffe Way: 5:00 AM to 3:45 PM closed.
Modifications to Bus Service:
a) Transportation Services: Buses
- Some stops will shutter, and services will relocate as buses are reroute to avoid the race routes. Anchor Road, Broad Weir, College Green, and several other stops in the city centre are notable examples of the affected stops.
- Starting at 6:00 AM, Brislington Park & Ride will be open with modified services. However, the Portway Park & Ride service won’t be available that day.
b) Floating Harbor:
- There will be further effects on the Floating Harbour’s access points. Before 3:30 PM, Prince Street Bridge will not be open for vessel traffic.
Routes 1 and 2: Detours via Bond Street, Old Market roundabout, and Temple Way.
Routes 3 and 4: Routes 3 and 4 have been change to circumvent Park Street and terminate at Lower Union Street.
Route 5: Park Row and Marlborough Street detours.
Routes 6, 7, 42, 43, 44, and 45 end at Bond Street and divert via the gyratory on Newfoundland Road.
Route 9 (Brislington Park & Ride): This route solely connects Bristol City Center and Brislington Park & Ride.
Schedule for Race Day:
The races begin at 8:45 AM with the Mascot Race, followed by the Family Run at 9:00 AM and several waves of the 10k beginning at 9:25 AM. Waves for the Half Marathon will begin at 10:40 AM. Residents and participants can visit the Great Run website and the event information provided by Bristol City Council for a comprehensive map and particular hours of the closures. Establishing alternate routes or means of transportation ahead of time enables attendees and locals to move about the city efficiently.
